Star Trek: Discovery: Life, Itself (2024)
Bland characters without personality
This was by far the most difficult episode to watch. I'm so glad it's over because I couldn't bear another minute of cheesy melodrama, which lasted for a solid 20 minutes after the story ended.
The only upside, and I'll start with that, is that the special effects are really really nice. Well done from that department. Consistent quality throughout the whole show. But really, what's more expensive? Aa good script and character arcs, or special effects? What do people prefer? I think it's the former. Especially when your audience is Star Trek fans.
In the end Book and Burnham suddenly have a child, who's absolutely perfect, has no character and no back story. He's just there, and he deserves emotional hugs from over emotional parents in an uneasy and unrealistic setting. Why is he doing the weird shoulder wipe thing? Isn't that a dance move from this current decade? Really, people are still doing the exact same "cool" moves over a 1000 years in the future? My guess it's gone in 5 years. Are we still dancing like Vikings now? No, of course not.
This is just one of endless examples of things that have not been thought through. Nothing makes sense, everything makes you have questions about the why, the how..
The cheesy ending, where every character gets to be their annoying self for another minute is tedious and unnecessary. Some of the characters I still don't know the name of. I know Detmar and Owoshekun, but who are they really? They had 1 lame attempt on a backstory in 1 episode, and that was about it. They have no personality. None of the characters do. You don't feel for them, they won't ever be missed when they're gone, and some of them just constantly appear in the background and never really get used for the story.
I'm curious to know about the species of Linus for example. But no, he's just there. No info.
But the worst character of all, even though she does have a backstory, has to be Burnham. Everything is perfect. She can change the minds of the highest levels of politicians with 2 sentences. She can convince enemies to work together with her. She knows the answer to everything to a Dr Who level of sudden explaining of everything. It makes no sense, even someone with 200 IQ is not like this. She is "worthy" according to the progenitors, though in my opinion she is absolutely not. Worst captain ever.
How are you worthy of progenitors tech when you can solve a simple puzzle of triangles? Are we supposed to buy this as a viewer? Are we incapable of solving baby puzzles ourselves? How dumb does this show want its audience to be?
I could go on forever, like the "shove in your face" mentality of overrepresentation of the entire show. The U. S. S. Diversity must include everything, but no one really has any heart, any motivation. Characters are just there, they are bland and empty. Even Saru started to annoy me by the end of the show.
Is this really what the new audience wants? I don't think so. Viewership numbers show it's not that popular. IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes ratings show it's not that popular.
Thankfully the Michael Burnham show is now done, and I will never watch it again, even at gunpoint. It's now known that the new show Star Trek Academy will also set in the Discovery era. But with Kurzman at the helm I have zero faith in any success. Let's hope Strange New Worlds will continue its path, because that's at least watchable.
The Garfield Movie (2024)
Fun for all ages
I came to the movie to see the Garfield that I used to love from the comics from when I was a kid, and I definitely got that. The drawing style of all the characters was very recognizable and the slapstick humor that I wanted to see was present throughout the whole movie.
I must say the voice of Chris Pratt was better than expected and I think it did the character justice. Not a single moment did it not come across as unbelievable. The other voice actors were perfect and wonderfully exaggerated at moments, which fits the movie perfectly.
Jon didn't have a very big role in the movie, unfortunately, but when he was there he was like Jon was supposed to be. A bit goofy and funny.
Odie, however, was not very much like the character in the comics in my opinion. He used to be an abused sidekick that was basically always in the way and very stupid, but here he was the Robin that did everything for Garfield and he got credit for it as well. Modern times I suppose.
The plot is far fetched, the story is weird and has holes, but all that doesn't matter because it technically is a children's movie. I enjoyed the jokes and the animation quite a lot and so did my kids.
Don't compare it to the 2004 movie.
Star Trek: Discovery: Species Ten-C (2022)
Finally something we've all been waiting for!
Just kidding, the episode was just as horrible as the rest of the season, if not worse. The whole season has been such a bad one that no single episode can make up for it.
To the people who keep saying to just stop watching: Yes, you might be right, but we we also watch this because we expect Star Trek to deliver quality TV. Especially with a budget like this. We're disappointed.
Besides, these are reviews. Reviewers can also watch bad shows and give their honest opinion about it.
What strikes mas even more odd is that the positive reviewers believe we are here deliberately to downvote the show. No, it's just funny how bad the episodes are and the large majority seems to agree on that. It's not a small army of trolls, it's actually a huge group of people who are utterly disappointed in the massive failure of the writing staff who obviously have very serious emotional issues that they need to go see someone about. This is not Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek and his son should really be doing something about it.
I can't even go into detail about the episode, there are always so many things that don't make sense.
Remember season 1 of TNG? When Diana Troy was super emotional in the first 2 episodes of the series and it was just cringeworthy as hell? After that it became better and better and better. Why is this the other way around? Why isn't there someone in the writing staff to just says "I can't write this anymore, I quit"? It can't be possible that the whole crew who works on this show is happy about it.
