Tis the season to be...well informed. We all love Christmas, but how much do any of us actually know about why Christmas is the way it is? Here are 31 facts about Christmas trees, Santa Claus, and Rudolph that you (probably) didn’t know. Smarten up! 1. Christmas supposedly marks the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25. But there is no mention of December 25 in the Bible and most historians actually believe he was born in the spring. 2. Many of the popular Christmas traditions today found their roots in Saturnalia: Branches from evergreen trees were used during winter solstice as a reminder of the green plants that would grow in spring when the sun gods grew strong. 4. These evergreen branches became the foundation of our Christmas tree. Germans are thought...

“Beauty, Love, Mother... And America”
By Raymond Benson
Filmmaker Terrence Malick has perhaps out-mystique’d the great Stanley Kubrick in terms of his public perception. Famously reclusive, Malick never allows photographs of himself to be used, and he never appears in “making of” documentaries about his films. A Rhodes Scholar and a Harvard graduate, he is obviously a brilliant man. Once he got into the film business, he worked as a script doctor until he made his first feature, Badlands (1973). It was critically acclaimed and established Malick as a hot addition to the “New Hollywood” movement. Next came Days of Heaven in 1978, also critically lauded.
And then... he disappeared. For twenty years.
In 1998, he appeared on the scene again, and Hollywood was more than ready to open checkbooks and fund his third feature film, The Thin Red Line.
It takes a lot of mystique for that scenario to happen.

“Come, spirit, help us sing the story of our land. You are our mother. We, your field of corn. We rise from out of the soul of you.” The wind blows. The crickets gently chirp. The grass crunches ever subtly beneath your feet. The green of the leaves, the rippling of the water, the drift of the clouds. The whisper of your own poetic thoughts. This is the unique and altogether enveloping world of Terrence Malick's tale of love, understanding, warfare and strife that came with the clash of cultures in what would be Virginia, circa 1607. The story of Captain John Smith (a commandingly vulnerable Colin Farrell) and Pocahontas (an expressively radiant Q'orianka Kilcher) is a matter of historic legend, having...

Hollywood always seems to be looking for the next big lucrative film franchise. Studios have looked at several existing properties in hopes of finding their big meal ticket, and some of those properties include classic action figure toy lines and cartoon series from the 1980s. As a viewer, a pilgrimage is also required; if you haven’t been following Malick’s lead, it’s very difficult to find his destination. All of his films search for immaterial satisfaction: a utopia, a love, a connection beyond empirical explanation. It can be seen in Badlands (1973) through Kit’s desire to mythologize himself into a timeless enigma, or in the “other world” that Private Witt imagines in The Thin Red Line (1999), or when...
