Before his career-defining success in the Rocky franchise, Sylvester Stallone was a struggling actor earning just breadcrumbs for his acting roles. Once Rocky happened in 1976, it made Stallone into an overnight star and he admitted that the sudden fame may have got to his head. He revealed in an old interview that he was heading down a path of self-destruction with his arrogance when a fan comment kicked some sense into him.

Hollywood has no shortage of action movies and has cooked up some of the best action films of all time over the years. Bruce Willis’ Die Hard surely occupies a high place in Hollywood’s Hall of Fame for the genre. Not only did it branch out an incredible franchise, but the movie also inspired a bunch of other iconic movies like Under Siege, Speed, The Rock, and many more.
Die Hard (1988) | 20th Century Studios
Among these movies is Sylvester Stallone’s 90’s classic, Cliffhanger. Based on Willis’ top-of-class action film, Stallone’s flick would have never happened had the action thriller not been released.

Long before Sylvester Stallone found himself on the receiving end of a severe beatdown from Dolph Lundgren in Rocky IV, the action star let his body be tortured by another star in Rocky II. But it did not stop him from making the fights authentic in the huge sports drama franchise created by Stallone himself.

Stallone’s co-star, Carl Weathers, who played Apollo Creed in the franchise, one of the strongest opponents his character had faced, unleashed a hellish pounding on Stallone. However, it was all because of the request from the Rocky II lead and director, Stallone. Putting his body on the line somewhat paid off as the franchise went on to be a huge hit, which propelled his career upward in Hollywood.

Director Renny Harlin's "Cliffhanger" is a quintessential '90s action movie. The right movie at the right time, it is one of the few true breakout action flicks starring Sylvester Stallone that's not connected to "Rocky," "Rambo," or "The Expendables." It's a lean, fun, crowd-pleasing thriller that features John Lithgow in a great villain performance (a villain role that almost went to David Bowie) and remains a product of its time in the best of ways. It also might not have happened at all had "Die Hard" not become a huge success a handful of years earlier.
In a 2023 20th anniversary retrospective in The Telegraph, it's explained that "Cliffhanger" started with co-producer Gene Hines, who saw a TV show about mountain climbers in the mid-'80s. "That got him interested in the world of climbing," said co-producer Jim Zatolokin. "It's a dynamic and unique world with a lot of characters.

Hollywood veterans Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and Bruce Willis are widely regarded as 3 of the greatest action heroes of all time, having gifted some of the most immersive pieces to the cinema. That’s why, when they collaborated for The Expendables films series, the result was nothing short of a pure blissful experience for audiences and big bucks for the actors.

However, years before they even started working together in this action-packed franchise created by Sly — nearly two decades, to be precise — this star-studded trio collaborated for a joint project in 1991 to earn millions of dollars merely from promotion. What are the greatest action movies of all time? It’s a controversial question, isn’t it? Any time any publication or site puts out a new list of what they consider the best action movies of all time, it can’t help but generate a ton of controversy. Nevertheless, we here at JoBlo have decided to throw our hats into the ring with a list we really hope generates some nostalgia among our viewers but also encourages them to seek out the movies on this list that they may not have seen. But first, some may wonder where superhero movies are on this list. Given how broad that genre is, we decided to stick to old-school action, so we have left them off the list, as they deserve their own ranking. There are also a few absences from the list, notably some Jackie Chan films (like Police Story), with...

In Stallone’s Instagram post, the Demolition Man discusses filming an “interesting scene in Tulsa King,“ which took place in a courtroom. After showing the elaborate set, Stallone says he’s “not supposed to be doing this” but that he “didn’t get here by following the rules,” and teases the release window for Tulsa King Season 2. While Stallone and Schwarzenegger took the 80s by storm with their famous brand of one-man-army spectacles, the latter part of the decade would also see a new breed of tough guys branch out into a different trend of action. It wasn’t only about the ripped muscles and the gunplay and explosions. After martial arts had gone mainstream, stars such as Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal would carve out their own little place at the box office as they brought their expertise of hand-to-hand combat to the masses.
Naturally, other studios would want to get in on the action and the best thing about jumping on this trend is the fact that there is still an aspect of originality since each star would be spotlighting a specific sect of martial arts. For example, Michael Dudikoff would showcase Ninjitsu, Seagal showcased Aikido, Phillip Rhee showcased Tae Kwan Do,...

What is it about Speed that always keeps people coming back for more? Now celebrating its third decade as one of the greatest action films ever made, Jan de Bont’s positively explosive bare bones rush hour movie is a rare case of an enduring Hollywood classic, with insanely bankable stars, that hasn’t been re-upped, remade or rebooted to death.
30 years on, it has spawned a wealth of imitators, a legion of die-hard fans (50Mph podcast we see you) and an entire legacy of super straightforward, super effective action cinema. But really only one legitimate sequel. So, what happened? How did such an influential movie falter? Why is an IP-hungry Hollywood, that’s somehow so starved it’s willing to bankroll a 9-figure stuntman movie based on an ancient and barely remembered ’80s TV show, so Speed-phobic? And most importantly of all, is the original still just as good as you remember it?...

Sylvester Stallone was used to doing real physical stunts in most of his action films. Which was why the actor didn’t really care all that much for having his hard work replaced digitally.
What Sylvester Stallone really felt about green screens vs. stunts Sylvester Stallone | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Stallone wasn’t too impressed with the opportunities technology like green screens created. Green screens can allow whole cities to come alive during movies without having to physically build sets. Or travel to other places to get the right look. They also presented the opportunity to lessen the burden of physical stunts for actors. Still, Stallone preferred the grounded reality and authenticity of action stunts. He actually might’ve found that a bit easier than doing green screens.

In the glamorous world of Hollywood, where stars often seem to lead fairy-tale lives, the reality behind the scenes can be far from glamorous. Sylvester Stallone, renowned for his portrayal of Rocky Balboa, has been in the public eye not only for his cinematic achievements but also for the challenging chapters of his personal life. One such chapter was his whirlwind romance with Brigitte Nielsen, which captivated the public as the two became one of the most iconic celebrity couples of the 1980s.

Ascended rock deity David Bowie appeared on TV and in movies as early as 1968, only shortly after the release of his first record. His first leading performance came in 1972 with the release of Nicolas Roeg's sci-fi satire "The Man Who Fell to Earth," a film about an alien who comes to Earth and becomes distracted by drugs, TV, and other unhealthy creature comforts. Bowie later played himself in Uli Edel's harrowing 1981 J.D. flick "Christiane F.," in addition to starring in the smoky vampire film "The Hunger" and terse Pow drama "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence." A younger generation fell in love with Bowie because of 1986's puppet film "Labyrinth," while he was cleverly cast as Pontius Pilate in Martin Scorsese's "The Last Temptation of Christ."
In 1993, when director Renny Harlin was preparing to make his mountainside actioner and Sylvester Stallone vehicle "Cliffhanger," he very much wanted Bowie to play the film's villain.

Featuring Sylvester Stallone in what sounds like a rare villain role, action thriller Alarum has just finished shooting. Scott Eastwood and Willa Fitzgerald also star.
The Shakespearian-sounding Alarum, an action thriller starring Sylvester Stallone, has just finished filming – and like Brad Anderson’s World-Breaker, is another mid-budget genre film looking for distribution at Cannes this week.
Directed by Michael Polish (Terror On The Prairie), Alarum appears to have cast Stallone in a rare villain role. To the best of our recollection, the only other time Sly’s played an antagonist was in Robert Rodriguez’s Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over in 2003.
Alarum’s leads are Scott Eastwood and Willa Fitzgerald, who play a pair of professional assassins who are off on a romantic break when they find themselves pursued by murderous CIA agents – the scariest of them played by Stallone.

Brendan Fraser’s The Mummy would’ve had a different actor playing a crucial role in the film. During a recent interview, director Stephen Sommers revealed that he tried to cast a famous Star Wars actor in the film. The character of Ardeth Bay in the film was initially written for an older actor and Sommers tried to cast Darth Vader actor James Earl Jones in the role. The director also considered Roscoe Lee Browne in the role, but both actors were busy with other projects.

Sommers then had to rewrite the character to be played by a much younger actor and cast Israeli actor Oded Fehr in the role. The character returned once again in the sequel film, The Mummy Returns, in 2001.

Long before headlining Amazon Prime’s The Boys series as Billy Butcher, Karl Urban attempted to lead a comic book film Dredd. The film was based on the comic strip Judge Dredd created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra for the 2000 Ad comic magazine. However, Urban’s film was not the first adaptation of Judge Dredd, as Sylvester Stallone did it first in his 1995 film of the same name.
Karl Urban as Judge Dredd in Dredd (2012)
Even though both the Judge Dredd films underperformed financially, Karl Urban had an upper hand. Urban’s version was liked by critics and is also regarded as a cult classic by fans. Even the home media sales of Dredd were impressive.
It looks like The Boys fame already expected his film to be on higher ground as he had a savage message for Sylvester Stallone on the release of his remake.

Sylvester Stallone was famously cast as Judge Dredd years before Karl Urban took up the role. But although Stallone was his predecessor, Urban quipped Stallone’s feelings would have little affect on his own thoughts.

Stallone explored the comic book genre when he was cast as the titular character Judge Dredd. The actor played a law authority in a corrupt future where he was judge, jury, and executioner to all criminals. In Jane Killick’s The Making of Judge Dredd, it was revealed that Stallone was the first choice for the role. Stallone took to the initial draft of the script immediately.

Sylvester Stallone has recut Rocky 6, aka Rocky Balboa, and we’ll get to see the new cut of the movie in the summer. More here.
Following his tinkering with the iconic Rocky IV, Sylvester Stallone admitted that he was looking at putting together alternate cuts of some of his other Rocky movies. He’s been true to his word too, with franchise revival Rocky Balboa next in line for the treatment.
It became known that the original cut of the movie went well past the two hour mark. MGM was believed to be instrumental in Stallone cutting it back to just over 100 minutes, and inevitably, this left a lot on the cutting room floor. Still, the film was very well received, and had it not taken off in the way that it did, we probably wouldn’t have the Creed franchise now.

However, things appear to have changed drastically in recent times because Stallone sparked controversies after offering a glimpse of his lethal boxing gloves from his Oscar-winning Rocky movies.

The director of Green Book, Peter Farrelly, is set to make a film based on the ultimate Hollywood underdog story: the making of 1976’s Rocky.
That old saying about art mirroring life? It’s never been as true (in Hollywood at least) as in the mid-1970s when a young Sylvester Stallone wrote a boxing underdog story that was pursued by a major movie studio. However, Stallone refused to sell unless he got to play the lead, despite suffering from a partially paralysed face and a speech impediment.
In the end, the underdog triumphed and that film, Rocky, became one of the most successful films of the year and an instant classic. Now it has been announced that Peter Farrelly will be turning the real-life drama of Stallone’s fight to get the film made – while also staying involved in the project – to the screen.

"Rocky" is one of the most beloved sports movies of all time. One could probably even stretch beyond to say that it's plainly and simply one of the most beloved American movies ever made. Now, the movie is getting the "making of" treatment in a new film titled "I Play Rocky." The project has lined up a slightly unexpected director in the form of Peter Farrelly, known best for his work on screwball comedies such as "There's Something About Mary" and "Dumb & Dumber."
According to Variety, Farrelly is set to direct. What's more, casting is already underway for the lead role. Sylvester Stallone, who played Rocky Balboa in the original and its many sequels, is not specifically named as the inspiration for this lead role. However, it's crystal clear this movie is about the actor and his journey to get the cinematic classic made. The logline for the film...

“Green Book” director Peter Farrelly will take audiences behind-the-scenes on the unlikely and tumultuous production of “Rocky,” the boxing drama that catapulted Sylvester Stallone into stardom.
“I Play Rocky,” the upcoming film, will follow Stallone long before his action hero days. Here, he’s a struggling actor whose partially paralyzed face and a speech impediment hasn’t left him in demand by Hollywood. But betting on his talent, Stallone writes a hot script that a big movie studio wants to buy. However, he refuses to sell it unless he gets to play the lead. Turning down an offer of life-changing money, he instead works for a pittance in order to get the movie made with himself as the title character. The result is the biggest box office hit of 1976, as well as an Academy Award juggernaut that went on to win best picture.

Now here’s a real underdog story. Peter Farrelly (“Green Book”) is set to direct a film inspired by the story of how Sylvester Stallone came to make his seminal 1976 boxing film “Rocky.”

Sylvester Stallone is set to part with some of his beloved watches, with the Rocky star auctioning 11 luxury timepieces from his collection at Sotheby’s New York on June 5. Included in the sale is an extremely rare Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime, seen by enthusiasts and collectors as one of the most complicated wristwatches in the world, that originally sold for $2.5 million.
Aside from Stallone’s star power, what’s sure to draw interest to the forthcoming sale is that this will be the first time a Grandmaster Chime has been put up for commercial auction. In 2019, at the Only Watch charitable auction, a one-off steel model Grandmaster Chime sold for a whopping $31 million, setting a record. Stallone’s Grandmaster Chime has a price estimate between $2.5 million to $5 million, but is likely to climb well north of that, with a record price for a watch at a non-charity auction a real possibility.

Challengers and The Fall Guy prove that the movie star is still alive – and can make a huge difference to a film’s success. A few thoughts…
The movie star is dead. Or at least our idea of stardom may have drastically changed. After streaming has become a credible rival to cinemas, it’s not so much star power that necessarily gets people to spend their hard-earned money on a movie ticket. Sure, the Swifties ran to the cinemas to watch The Eras Tour, but Taylor Swift is hardly a movie star, despite her turn in Cats.
Ana De Armas blames social media for the lack of movie stars. “I feel like the new generations don’t have that concept, because of social media,” de Armas told Vanity Fair in 2023. “There is so much information out there and oversharing. The concept of a movie star is someone untouchable you only see onscreen.

The Fall Guy is a movie that celebrates and spotlights the importance of stunt performers, dressed up in an entertaining action thriller that has a real commitment to giving audiences a good time. Helped along, of course, by Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. But they aren’t the only ones making this film what it is, as we had the pleasure in speaking to the supporting star Winston Duke, as well as director & producer team (and husband and wife); David Leitch and Kelly McCormick.
We speak about the roles of stunt performers, and whether they believe there could be a chance of a stunt Oscar in the foreseeable future. We speak about Spielberg seeing (and liking) the movie, while with Duke, who we could’ve spoken to for hours, we get deep into the differences between Schwarzenegger, and Stallone. Enjoy both interviews in their entirety below.

Just take a sneaky peak back on the movies we’ve covered so far on our Arnie Revisited series, and the Austrian Oak had already covered several genres in his rise from bodybuilder to Hollywood icon. Raw Deal and Commando were straight-up action movies, while his work as Conan was an epic mix of action and fantasy. You can even argue that The Terminator is a classic 80s slasher flick, and not simply the revolutionary sci-fi masterpiece it’s generally regarded as. However, he hadn’t managed to blend both horror and science fiction in any of his previous movies, in the way he did with the film we’re focusing on in today’s episode – Predator. It was such a huge success for both star and franchise that it not only helped to further cement Arnie as a Hollywood icon, but also created a franchise packed with sequels, a prequel,...

Dolly Parton’s ebullient personality makes it seem like little gets her down, but things still bother the singer. According to one of her backup singers, three things deeply disturbed the Queen of Country. Outside one show in Atlanta, a woman upset her by touching on two of these things.
Dolly Parton’s friend said an encounter outside a show disturbed the singer
Parton has been famous for decades and has often leaned into gossip about her as a way to promote her projects. She admitted that while tabloids often overblow news, there is typically a grain of truth in the stories they run. It bothers her deeply when there is not, and magazines run outright lies about her.
Even worse than this is when someone doubts her talent, or calls her songwriting into question. Parton rightfully takes immense pride in her work and she finds it incredibly hurtful when...

After more than fifty years of a successful acting career, Sylvester Stallone still got it all — but sometimes he himself doubts it.
Despite a considerable age of 77 years, the legendary actor doesn’t seem to have a problem with keeping up with his younger colleagues, but one of his recent projects gave him a weird feeling about the whole situation.
2022 marked Stallone’s first leading role on television thanks to his crime drama show Tulsa King. The storyline follows Dwight "The General" Manfredi, a Mafia leader who is back on track after being released from prison and immediately sent to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he tries to revive his criminal career by forming a new organization.
Feeling somewhat out of place after 25 years of isolation, Dwight instead creates The Manfredi Crime Family.
Though Stallone definitely looks good even against his younger co-stars, one scene actually kind of hurt his feelings. Talking to The Hollywood Reporter recently,...

Oftentimes, a sequel to a much-beloved film fails to meet the expectations set by its predecessors, which eventually ends up tainting the original’s legacy. Fortunately, this wasn’t the case with Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky, arguably his most iconic franchise, which is still going strong with Michael B. Jordan taking its reign with the Creed features.
However, getting the first sequel off the ground wasn’t easy, and if it wasn’t for one plot twist, Rocky might not have gone on to become one of the most celebrated franchises in the sports genre.
One Illogical Plot Twist Was Made in Rocky 2 to Combat Sylvester Stallone’s Injury

Coming off the success of the Rocky, which won the Oscar for Best Picture, the sequel had a lot to live up to. But just a month and a half before the shooting was about to kickstart,...
